Download Problems (and solutions)
This section assumes that you have tried to download our install_animoids.exe file on a Windows PC, but were either unsuccessful in completing the download, or were unsuccessful in using that downloaded file to install our ANIMOIDS Client on your PC.

The majority of our users are able to download and install ANIMOIDS with no problems. However, a few users have reported the following problems:

When ANIMOIDS runs the first time I see a message video capture device detection failed in a small window

This is not uncommon. It's not a problem. ANIMOIDS does not currently make use of video capture. However our JMF libraries do search for capture devices on first time startup. Failure to detect the video capture device will in no way affect the operation of ANIMOIDS.

Download is very slow over a dial up modem

We apologize for this problem. We beg your patience and hope you'll enjoy the results.

However, if your download speed is significantly slower than your modem, try downloading directly from one of our distribution servers. (Our servers are normally capable of delivering from 100-300 KBytes/Sec to a fast modem.)

If all else fails, you can purchase ANIMOIDS on a CD!

The installer "install_animoids.exe" won't run or immediately crashes with a Windows error message
The file (install_animoids.exe) that you downloaded is probably corrupt or incomplete (as a result of a poor quality Internet connection).

The (install_animoids.exe) file size is normally between 26 and 27 Mb - you can check the size of the file you downloaded and see if it is incomplete.

Please download a new copy of the install_animoids.exe file and try again.

The installer install_animoids.exe starts, but dies with a "Install Anywhere" error message or a "bad magic number" error message

The installer install_animoids.exe starts, but quits during the "Preparing to install phase" without displaying an error message
Our installer Install Anywhere (from ZeroG) uses the Microsoft Windows TEMP environment variable to point to a temporary directory that is used during the install process.

On Windows XP that environment variable might point to something like:

    C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp

Try changing this environment variable to a valid directory and try the installation again.

On Windows XP, an alternative is to create a new account with admin permissions and load ANIMOIDS from that account.

You get a "server not responding" error when you try to download install_animoids.exe
We current serve our unstall_animoids.exe file from several servers. The file you download should be identical no matter which server you use.

When you click our Start Free Download button you may be directed to any one of our download servers.

You can access the four servers directly (to download install_animoids.exe) by using the following links:

  Special note to AOL users
The AOL service caches files. Normally this causes no problems for AOL users. However, if you are an AOL user and you download a bad copy of install_animoids.exe, then immediately download another copy, you may simply get another copy of the bad file.

You can get round this potential problem in two ways: After downloading a bad copy of the file:

    • Log out of AOL then back in again - you'll probably get your file from a different caching server.
    • (Best solution.) Use a stand-alone browser (e.g. IE or Netscape) to download install_animoids.exe after you login to AOL.
  File download stops at 99%
Give it time - This might simply be your anti-virus software doing a thorough job in scanning a very large .exe file.

I've seen McAfee VirusScan take more than a minute to scan our installer on a 500 MHz Win 98 platform. Slower machines will take longer.

The fact that it also appears to hang up you PC during this process makes some users want to kill and restart their PCs. Give it time...

(You can prove the above by temporarily disabling your anti-virus software during the download. But I would not recommend doing that. Keep your PC safe!)

  Any other problems
We want ANIMOIDS to be a great, reliable piece of software.

If you experience any other problems during installation, or the above solutions don't work for you - please let us know.
