Download Java3D from apple.com
ANIMOIDS on Max OS X requires Java3D. If you try running ANIMOIDS without
an Java3D installed, ANIMOIDS will issue a warning then stop.
Java3D is available for free download from Apple. It's not part of the standard
Apple software update, so you'll need to download it manually.
You can download Java3D from
www.apple.com

Update to the latest ANIMOIDS Program from an earlier version
ANIMOIDS comes with Smart Update utility that can
quickly update your ANIMOIDS client code.
System Requirements
For Mac® OS X
- OS X 10.3.1 or later
- Java 1.4.1 or later
- Java3D
- 80 Mb disk space for installation.
- 256 Mb (RAM) memory
- Optional Internet connection for full functionality.
However, full editing capability is available without the Internet.
Memory is the most important factor in program performance.
Although the program may happily run with less than 128 Mb of physical (RAM) memory, it
will run slowly with lots of very long pauses. 256 Mb memory is the recommended minimum
for usable performance. If you plan to work with larger models (or Movie Sets with many models)
you'll want at least 512 Mb or RAM.
Java 1.4.1 and Java 1.4.2
ANIMOIDS on Max OS X requires Java 1.4.1 or later. If you try running ANIMOIDS with
an older version of Java, ANIMOIDS will issue a warning then stop.
Java 1.4.2 is now the default version of Java from Apple.
If you regularly update your Apple software online, you should already have Java 1.4.2.
If you don't have Java 1.4.1 or later (or you have an incomplete copy of Java 1.4.1 because you did an upgrade
install of "Panther") you can get a new copy using Apple's Software Updates or from
www.apple.com.
Memory
The current production Apple version of Java/Java3D for the Mac appears to have a
memory leak that affects ANIMOIDS.
What happens is that, if you open a series of objects in ANIMOIDS, some of the memory used
by earlier objects does not get released. Eventually ANIMOIDS will terminate with an error
message if too much memory is used.
Exiting or restarting ANIMOIDS will free the leaked memory. So there is no long-term harm to your Mac.
Depending upon what you are trying to do with ANIMOIDS you can probably edit from between
5 - 10 objects before you need to restart. You can press ANIMOIDS Memory button during
any editing session to find out how much memory you are using.
If you are working on complex movie scenes or very large objects, you may need to restart more often.
Java 1.4.2
Although ANIMOIDS ran well with Apple's Java 1.4.1, we have observed that a Mac upgraded
from Apple's Java 1.4.1 to 1.4.2 can experience abrupt termination of the
ANIMOIDS program during normal operation.
We have not yet identified the source of this problem.
Graphics Emulation
ANIMOIDS allows you to set the graphics hardware acceleration level. However, those settings
currently have no effect on the Mac version.
Pure Java Application
ANIMOIDS is a pure Java application. It does not (yet) provide Mac specific functionality
- like displaying the main menu on the Apple toolbar. (The menu appears at the top of the
Window as in a MS Windows application.)
Additionally, the application uses the Java Metal User Interface instead of
Apple's Aqua User Interface.
